Gakkou no Kowai Uwasa: Hanako-san ga Kita!! (学校のコワイうわさ 花子さんがきた - Literally "Scary School Rumors - Here Comes Hanako") was a book series about magical-ghost girl Hanako. [1]

The books were written by Shihime Morikyo (森京 詞姫) with various illustrators, and published by Takeshobo beginning in 1994, and running 10 volumes through August 1996. The books were a companion to the anime Hanako-san ga Kita!! which was a series of 5-minute shorts that played during the show Ponkikki Kids. In 1995, a matching video game came out as well.

The books each had eight short stories as written text, in a similar manner as Toru Tsunametsu's Gakkou no Kaidan books, plus three stories fully illustrated as manga. It does not seem to be affiliated with the Gakkou no Kaidan books.

After the release of the Ghost Stories anime in 2000, the books were revived with a second series running from May 2006 for 20 volumes through May 2014. This second series borrowed some of the principal ghosts from Ghost Stories, such as the statue of Kinjiro Ninomiya, and Man-Faced Dog. They also borrowed the use of Class 5-3. In 2008 a related game came out for Nintendo DS, and in 2010 the anime was revived as well.

The appearance of Hanako in this series, with the red skirt and the bob hair-cut, would become the common style which she would be known by. The extent of this can be seen in the 2020 anime Toilet-Bound Hanako, in which they feel it necessary to mention right in the first episode, that the students found it unusual that Hanako didn't have the skirt or the haircut (not to mention being a boy).
