Episode 11: "The Talking Mary Doll - The Shadows of Horror" is the eleventh episode of Ghost Stories. The English dubbed title for this episode is "Child's Play."

Synopsis[]

Keiichirou finds a beautiful porcelain doll at the dumpster. Satsuki tells him to leave the doll where it is, but it mysteriously appears at her house. Soon, Satsuki is stalked by the doll, who keeps keep calling Satsuki saying, "I'm Mary! Let's play?" Satsuki blames the doll's appearance on Keiichirou, even though he did not bring the doll back. Hajime, Momoko, and Leo join the two and give the doll to a temple where the toys of deceased people remain. However, the trouble becomes bigger when Satsuki finally thinks she is safe...

Keiichirou finds a porcelain doll sitting on a trash can. He wants it, but Satsuki tells him to leave it. That evening, she is surprised to find it at the house. She cleans it up a bit before berating Keiichirou for bringing it home. He swears that he didn’t bring there, but is made to take it back to the trashcans.

Prank phone calls come to the house. It’s Mary calling, wanting to play, and the doll is back in the house. This time they have their dad, Reiichirou, get rid of it.

Prank phone calls come to the school. It’s Mary, wanting to play, and the doll is at the school. What’s more, Reiichirou is in the hospital after an accident, which they attribute to the doll as well. They drive the doll to a temple that collects old toys, and leave it with the priests.

Satsuki, Hajime, and Keiichirou sneak off to hide in an old warehouse where there’s no phones, like that’s going to work. The doll must not be in the ghost diary. Mary shows up, and brings all the friends she made back at the temple. The crowd of toys ties up Satsuki, and is about to dismember her, when her handkerchief falls from her pocket. It’s what Satsuki used to clean the dolls face. Seeing this, Mary has a change of heart, and sets her free.

    Bratz was a line of children’s dolls which had reached great success in the 3 or 4 years before the show aired. They featured a sexy look, and clothing that followed pop culture trends.

    Joan Crawford was popular in a number of rags-to-riches movies during the Great Depression.

    It’s been a while since the series’ most common whipping boy got a mention.
  • “Your little dollie has come to us at a most opportune time. She’ll play the Tara Reid character from Alone in the Dark.” – Head Monk
    Alone in the Dark was a 2005 horror movie based on a video game. It starred not just Tara Reid, but also the great Christian Slater.

    Polly Pocket was a line of dolls that were small enough to fit in your pocket. After several redesigns they were discontinued in North America in 2012.
  • “Just piss on the Toby Keith poster.” – Hajime
    Country singer Toby Keith drew the ire of progressives with his warmongering 2001 song “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue”. He would go on to become America’s richest country singer, play at Donald Trump’s inauguration, and be awarded the National Medal of Arts. Take that, Dixie Chicks.
  • “Danger! Danger! Will Robinson. Oh wait, wrong movie.” - Toy
    This is the catchphrase of the robot from Lost In Space.
